IPL Photofacial
An Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial is an intense, visible, broad-spectrum light that heats and destroys brown spots, broken capillaries and sunspots on the face, neck and chest. An IPL Photofacial treats skin with quick, powerful flashes of light; the light penetrates below the skin’s surface to target where brown discoloration lives. Then the heat works to break down the pigment into tiny particles, which either rise to the skin’s surface as scabs, or get carried away by the body’s lymphatic system.
Helps remove pigment (sun damage) and reduce redness, improves skin surface and collagen.
IPL should not be confused with a laser. Instead of using a single wavelength of light, IPL uses a flash of filtered light of which wavelengths are those taken up by pigment and blood vessels.
How Long Does an IPL Photofacial Take?
IPL Photofacials typically take between 30 minutes to an hour.
Should You Try an IPL Treatment?
If you want an intensive skin resurfacing treatment, and you want little-to-no-downtime after the procedure, an IPL Photofacial may be right for you. What to expect during an IPL Photofacial:
- You will be given protective eyewear to wear during the procedure.
- A cool gel will then be applied to the treatment area to lubricate and protect the epidermis during the treatment.
- Through a hand piece, the specialist will apply the bright light to the skin.
- Depending on the size of the area being treated, the procedure may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

How Many Treatments are Needed?
We recommend 3-6 treatments to show significant results, but some patients see results after their first treatment. IPL Photofacials can occur a minimum of three to four weeks. We can schedule all of your treatment dates at the same time or after each service.
Is There Really No Downtime?
Because IPL Photofacial treatments use multiple wavelengths of light instead of lasers, the treatments work without any deep resurfacing. There is usually little or no downtime after an IPL Photofacial. Redness, possibly swelling for a few days. Peppering up to 7 days. Wear sunscreen for 2 weeks after. It is possible to see successful results after the first treatment. IPL Photofacials rank high in customer satisfaction because of its convenience and significant benefits.
What Are The Risks of IPL?
Most side effects from treatments that use IPL are mild and will go away within a couple of hours or days of treatment.
Common Possible Risks:
- Capillaries may appear larger or darker immediately after an IPL treatment, but this will resolve very quickly.
- Facial redness; face may appear flushed temporarily. Some peppering (coffee ground) look for a few days but no actual downtime.
- We recommend wearing a daily sunscreen for two weeks after treatment as your skin will be extra-sensitive to sunlight.
